Welcome to The City Of Mexico Missouri
Image
Mexico has been named one of Missouri’s D-R-E-A-M communities.  The downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri initiative began in 2006 with the selection of ten communities.  Mexico’s application was selected for the 2007 program cycle.

According to the state website the D-R-E-A-M Initiative is a comprehensive, streamlined approach to downtown revitalization that provides a one-stop shop of technical and financial assistance for select communities to more efficiently and effectively engage in the downtown revitalization process.

This unique new tool reduces the complexity involved in financing downtown revitalization plans through a coordinated approach.

Being designated a D-R-E-A-M Community gives Mexico a higher priority for the partner agencies resources and can help our communities set goals for the improvement for our downtown.” according to City Manager Todd Thompson.

“The Chamber of Commerce and the Village Square Association are very excited about the D-R-E-A-M Initiative and the City of Mexico welcomes the opportunity to partner with these groups to utilize the D-R-E-A-M program to the best advantage of our downtown district".

“Downtown” and “On the Square” are phrases that bring fond memories of a different time. Mexico, Missouri believes that those memories are a strong connection to our roots. Our downtown is home to the specialty shops you enjoy; antiques, quilting and scrapbook businesses are locally owned and take great pride in their products.

The Audrain County Historical Museum, built in 1856, has seen many changes in Mexico and holds our history dear. The Museum sponsors the “Walk Back in Time” a hugely successful re-enactor event representing history from pioneer days to the most recent military events. They offer a glimpse into Mexico’s history including the Saddlebred Horse Museum. Truly fitting as Mexico was once “The Saddle Horse Capitol of the World”.

Take a walk! With two new hard surface trails in our parks it is easier than ever to wander. The Green Estate Park has three asphalt trails with a combined distance of almost 2 miles. This 90 acre park was a gift to the residents of Mexico by the A.P. Green family. Lakeview Park contains a new concrete trail made possible in part by a grant from the State of Missouri. This trail is approximately 1.5 miles around the perimeter of a 22 acre lake. There are a lot of other activities available in our Parks, but Mexico has more to offer: a newly renovated 19,000 square foot YMCA with indoor walking track, impressive fitness center and indoor pool.

Mexico is about activities…so get moving!

The newly restored historic Presser Performing Arts Center is the ideal location for a variety of community events including this year’s fall production of “The Wizard of OZ” by the Mexico Area Community Theatre. Local and regional talent includes vocal, musical groups and recitals. The annual Bluegrass Jam brings musicians from the surrounding areas to learn and enjoy their craft. Presser Hall has modern conveniences including new seating and air conditioning while remaining true to its historic charm.

Something is always happening…the Santa Train might be stopping by for its annual visit, or the downtown merchants may be sponsoring the Sunset Festival. Local civic groups sponsor events like the Holiday Home Tour. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Farmers Market each summer. The local Prairie Pine Quilt Guild hosts an annual quilt show and local quilt shops offer a “Shop Hop” for quilters. The Mexico Elks Lodge sponsors a summer air show that this year included a restored C-47 and more than 70 aircraft flying to the Mexico. The Air Show attracted approximately 6,000 people. Next year promises to be even bigger and better.

Mexico has something for everyone, including you!

The Missouri Military Academy is the site for the Miss Missouri Pageant, a statewide preliminary to the Miss America Pageant. The official pageant has been held in Mexico for 37 years.

“Mainstreet of the Midwest” really describes Mexico, Missouri. You will find our community to be friendly, caring and ready to offer help. It is a place where people still greet each other with a smile. It is a place with a proud past and a hopeful future. Come see for yourself, we think you’ll feel right at home!
