Elmwood Cemetery News
Since opening Block Q at Elmwood Cemetery, the City has had an unofficial policy of holding spaces for future purchase. Families that purchased a space were allowed to “hold” the next space or spaces for a surviving spouse, child, parent, or other family members. Some of these spaces have been on hold for lengthy amount of time with no payment or benefit to the taxpayers who fund the Cemetery’s operation.

Effective immediately, the policy has been changed to eliminate the unfair nature of holding a space that has not been purchased, as the number of spaces available for sale are decreasing and there are no immediate plans for increasing spaces at this time.

Individuals and families will have until July 1, 2010 to purchase spaces that are being “hold” for them. All spaces that are being held and not paid in full by the July 1, 2010 will become available for purchase to the general public.

Homes For Our Troops - Volunteer To Help Local Resident Robert Canine!
Army SSG Robert Canine, Mexico Missouri, was a truck commander returning from a patrol in northwest Baghdad in May 2009 when an Explosively Formed Projectile (EFP) blasted into his vehicle leaving him with injuries so severe that both of his legs required amputation.
First transported to a field hospital, SSG Canine was then taken by Blackhawk helicopter to Balad before
arriving in Landstuhl, Germany where he fell unconscious. Five days later Robert awoke at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and began his road to recovery. SSG Canine enjoys spending time with his wife, Jennifer and eight year old son, Sebastian. He has always enjoyed playing football and watching baseball. He also enjoys fishing with his young son. At this point Robert is not sure what the future holds for him. He may decide to further his education or find a job that interests him...his main focus however will be taking care of his family. When asked if there was anything he would like to say to those who have made this specially adapted home possible SSG Canine replied, "I feel so honored that volunteers are willing to do so much for me and other veterans. It is humbling and I appreciate it so much. The specially adapted home I receive from Homes for Our Troops will eliminate the daily challenges I have just getting around...this home will improve my quality of living every day."
